JOIN O.C.N. FOR A JOURNEY OF FAITH TO TURKEY
OCN and Rev. Dr. Christopher Metropulos are hosting a pilgrimage to the glittering jewel of Asia Minor and the heart of Orthodoxy, Constantinople, June 5-13, 2012! For 9 days and 7 nights, visit the 17th century Greek Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate where you will bear witness to its solemn existence, spiritual strength, and religious devotion. Pray at the St George Cathedral and venerate the Holy Relics of St. Gregory the Theologian and St. John Chrysostom restored back to the Patriarchate after being forcibly removed by the 4th Crusaders in 1204. See the relics of the three female Saints - Euphemia, Solomone, and Theophano. Among other highlights in the Cathedral are the throne of the Ecumenical Patriarch, the column of Christ's flogging, and the famous icon of the Theotokos from the Byzantine Church of Pammakaristos. Participate in a private audience with His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew (subject to his availability).
Visit the most important sites for the Greek Orthodox in Constantiniople: Agia Sophia – the most important church in the Christian world; the Church of the Holy Savior of Chora - second most important Byzantine Church in Istanbul, known for its magnificent mosaics and frescoes; Baloukli Monastery and its Underground Shrine of Zoodochos Peghe; Topkapı Palace housing the relics of St. John the Baptist; Panagia Blacherna Church where the beautiful hymn, “Te Ypermacho” was chanted over 1,400 years ago; and the Grand Bazaar.
Our spiritual journey will also take us to Cappadocia! Cappadocia is a geological wonderland sculpted by erosion into a lunar landscape of natural arches, towering obelisks, bizarre castles and cones, and gigantic stone mushrooms. It became an area of refuge for persecuted Christians as early as the second century and by the fourth, it had produced several important saints. St Basil was one who taught in the Goreme Valley and who served as Bishop of Kayseri. Into the rocky moonscape of Cappadocia, the Christians carved out caves and, later, churches that were decorated with coned ceilings, graceful columns, and impressive frescoes. Labyrinthine underground cities grew, carved from the soft volcanic stone where Christians hid in the caves and underground cities to avoid persecution. We will also visit Kaymakli - one of the largest underground cities used as a sanctuary for an entire community from invading armies; the Goreme Open Air Museum - a moonscape volcanic valley filled with richly painted monastic churches hollowed from the soft volcanic stone; the old Greek village of Sinassos with its surviving church, St. Constantine and St. Helen; the Zelve Open Air Museum consisting of former dwellings and churches; and more.
Your final stop will be Smyrni, where you will see the old Greek neighborhood with its homes still empty after the “Catastrophe” of 1922. Between the Catastrophe and the Population Exchange, the Greek presence in Asia Minor was eliminated - a presence that had existed for over two millennia. Included is also a full-day tour to the ancient site of Ephesus, the most well-preserved ancient Greco-Roman city in the world! Walk through this ancient city, down a marble road rutted by the wheels of countless chariots, pass architectural masterpieces like the Magnesian Gate and the Library of Celsius before arriving at the Great Amphitheater where St. Paul was arrested and cast out of the city. Visit the Basilica of St. John the Theologian and where he is buried. You will also visit the House of the Virgin Mary where Catholics believe she spent the last years of her life.
Join us for this spiritual journey through Turkey! Look for more details coming on myocn.net and also watch for a travel blog during the pilgrimage.

Originally commissioned by SCOBA to create a national, sustainable and effective media witness for Orthodox Christianity throughout North America, OCN produces the only nationally syndicated Orthodox Christian radio broadcast, as well as several other outreach programs, including DVDs and internet-based media, in direct collaboration with sister assembly agencies (e.g., IOCC, OCMC, OCF, OCPM), as well as with various Orthodox Christian jurisdictions and pan-Orthodox, para-church organizations. THIS WEEK FROM THE ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN NETWORK
COME RECEIVE THE LIGHT - THE NATIONALLY SYNDICATED RADIO PROGRAM OF ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY
We continue our month-long look at what it means to be a Christian with the Professor of Church History at the Assemblies of God Seminary. You will be surprised to hear the answers of our guests as they discuss with Fr. Chris what they believe about being a Christian, the Eucharist and the social hot buttons of the day. It is equally interesting to hear how much respect they have for the Orthodox Christian faith. But first, we’ll reflect on the Sunday of the Holy Cross, which we celebrate this weekend.

OCN PODCASTS
On Theologically Thinking, Fr. Athanasios Haros of the Transfiguration Church in Florence, SC will speak on "What are you willing to do to be in the presence of God?" When Jesus was teaching in Capernaum, He was met by four friends who brought to Him a man needing healing. Jesus first said, “Son, your sins are forgiven,” establishing a priority for us to get good with the Lord for the sake of our immortal souls. Paralysis was keeping this young man from Christ. What is keeping you from His presence? On Special Moments in Orthodoxy, Fr. Thomas Hopko speaks about Great Lent, “The Tithe of the Year.” Great Lent is a time to minimize everything that makes us forget about God and focus on doing everything to think about Him. We also are pleased to announce that the Readings and Remembrances daily podcast is back! Tune in each day to hear the Scriptural Readings and lives of the Saints celebrated on that day.

ORTHODOX PARISHES: STAND WITH US.
Have you watched TV lately and noticed how much vitriol is directed against Christians?
The pundits tell us what's wrong with us and tell us what we believe. However, they are
almost always wrong about what we believe, especially about us as Orthodox Christians.
This is why we need a strong voice of our own in the media. This is why we need to stand
together. Please support OCN and participate in Share the Light Sunday in your parish. www.myocn.net/stl

WHO IS YOUR HERO? The nominations have started coming in for OCN Hero, but we still need more of you to tell us who your heroes are! In 2012, all Orthodox Christians over the age of 18 will have the opportunity to nominate someone as their Hero. The Hero will be a layperson who has distinguished him- or herself in Christian love and service to others. Please make an announcement during your Sunday Liturgy and tell all your parishioners to nominate someone. The winner will receive a paid excursion and $500 given in their name to the charity of their choice. The winner will also be a special guest on Come Receive the Light. Go to myocn.net/hero to nominate your hero. ******************
SHARE THE LIGHT PARTNERS
With 70 partners to date, we are nearing our goal of 100 for 2012 and have surpassed the total that we had for 2011. Many thanks to these generous individuals who have partnered with OCN to sustain our Orthodox media outreach.

THE SOUNDING SOUND OFF
In keeping with OCN’s theme this month, Keith Massey takes on the question, “What does it mean to be a Christian?” Can this title be given to every church claiming it? Orthodox novelist Heather Zydek offers insight into her latest book in her post, “Don’t Conform to the Pattern of This World. And Jennifer Hock continues to allow us to walk with her on her journey as she and her family honor the baby they lost by caring for other babies. Read her touching description of their experiences in “A Hidden Community.” The Sounding publishes new content every week day. We look forward to seeing you there, at http://blog.myocn.com.

ORTHODOX PARISHES: STAND WITH US.
We at the Orthodox Christian Network understand many of the challenges facing parishes today. There is economic strife and, in some cases, attrition of members. We know that it can be difficult to support the many ministries of our church, which is why we simply ask that your parish do what it can. We need the support of the faithful parishes of our church so that we can tell more and more people about the beautiful faith of Orthodox Christianity and, in turn, build stronger parishes. Please visit myocn.net/stl for more information about how your parish can be a part of helping OCN share the light of Orthodox Christianity.

SHARE THE LIGHT PARTNERS
This month, our Share the Light Partner (donors of $1,000 or more) totals spiked thanks to Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Washington, DC, the host parish of our March 2012 Share the Light Partner event. This event resulted in an additional 31 partners! OCN is now looking for a community in the Chicago area to host a similar event. At this point, we already have a donation for the place and food; all we need are the partners! If you are interested in chairing such an event, please contact Kathy Chapekis, OCN Annual Giving Coordinator, 954-522-5567.
The 2012 partner goal is 100. With 65 partners to date, over 50% of our goal has already been met! This is only two pledges short of the total 2011 partners, and we are only 2 and a half months into 2012. Of these, 56 have already fulfilled or are current with their pledge. Many thanks to these generous individuals who have partnered with OCN to sustain our Orthodox media outreach.

THE SOUNDING SOUND OFF
The Sounding takes on important issues this week. In “Being a Dialed-In Parent,” Christina Pessemier bears witness to the war we wage against cultural influences on our children. Fr. Lawrence Farley describes the three characteristics of spiritual heroism in “Big Damn Heroes.” Demosthenes Mekras offers a powerful answer to the question “Is God a product?” in his post on “One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church?” The Sounding publishes new blog posts every week day. On Theologically Thinking, Fr. Athanasios Haros of the Transfiguration Church in Florence, SC talks to us about “Game Day.” With the beginning of Great Lent, our pre-Lenten preparations are behind us. We have made our plan of action and now we begin the race to Holy Week and Pascha. The Church offers us a few final words of encouragement and guidance as we take the field for game day. With spiritual events of the prayer, fasting, and alms-giving in the Eucharist we will endure the race and be crowned victorious by our Lord, but it all begins with forgiveness. On Journey to Orthodoxy, Jordan Parro speaks with Garret Olson, the lead singer of the band "The Humdrum Rebellion" based in Orange County, California. Garret is the son of a Presbyterian pastor. After being challenged by the theology of the Church Fathers as a college student, he discovered the Orthodox Church and the healing found therein with help from some persistent friends and the Theotokos." You can listen to past programs on demand and find many other online resources to deepen your faith at www.MyOCN.net.
Come Receive the Light is produced by the Orthodox Christian Network. OCN has been an agency of SCOBA since 2003 and now works within the context of the new Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in North and Central America.
Our Programming Policy
OCN offers three types of programming in support of its mission and vision. It is our hope that the variety of approaches this permits will increase our effectiveness by ensuring that we reach the greatest number of people possible. These three types are teaching programs, interviews with official representatives of the Orthodox faith, and programs designed to provide information that will increase our ability to present our Orthodox faith in the context of the wider, secular world.
Teaching programs focused on the doctrine and practice of the Orthodox Church make up the majority of our site content, and they support the major goal of OCN. These programs may take the form of Biblical exegesis, lessons on Patristics, or dogmatic instruction. Examples of teaching programs include video classes, “Special Moments in Orthodoxy,” and “Theologically Thinking.”
Interviews with church officials are those in which Fr. Chris, or another representative of OCN, speaks with a hierarch, a priest, or another official representative of an Orthodox archdiocese or parish. The purpose of these interviews is to present a genuine Orthodox perspective or teaching on the issue under discussion. Many interviews on “Come Receive the Light” and “OCN Now” fall into this category, but it is important to note that not all do.
The third type of programming comprises interviews, podcasts, blogs, or articles specifically intended to provoke discussion and contemplation about the issues we face in daily life. When a guest is interviewed for this type of program, or asked to write on a subject for this purpose, our invitation does not constitute an endorsement of the guest’s beliefs or actions. Guests are selected on the basis of their ability to provide information or perspective that will be of value to our Orthodox listeners. Examples of this type of program include some interviews on “Come Receive the Light” and “OCN Now,” and also some articles that may appear on “The Sounding” or elsewhere on the website from time to time.
We live in a complex world, and our ability to make good decisions comes from our strong foundation in Orthodoxy and our genuine understanding of the people and problems around us. Our primary goal is to share the truth of Orthodoxy with the world. Our secondary goal is to generate fruitful conversations that strengthen us in our own faith and increase our ability to share it in meaningful ways with our fellow human beings.
It is not easy to speak or listen to people with whom we have little in common. But here at OCN, we believe in making the effort when doing so will contribute to the greater good.
We are not saints yet, and neither are our guests. But if we put aside judgment and criticism, and delve into the issues with honesty and sincerity, we hope that by the Grace of God, our conversations may contribute to our own salvation and to the salvation of our listeners. Only God knows how our words and deeds can be used to touch the lives of others.
OCN programs for February 27-March 2THIS WEEK FROM THE ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN NETWORK COME RECEIVE THE LIGHT - THE NATIONALLY SYNDICATED RADIO PROGRAM OF ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY
In our final show on the topic of Faith & Politics, we’ll discuss the intersection of personal faith and public policies. How do we hold fast to our Orthodox beliefs without denying the beliefs and rights of others? And, speaking of other people’s beliefs, how much do you know about the teachings of other Christian denominations? Fr. John Morris explains the importance of knowing about other churches’ teachings. Read more from Fr. Morris’ book, The Historic Church: An Orthodox View of Christian History: http://www.amazon.com/Historic-Church-Orthodox-Christian-History/dp/145673492X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327454991&sr=8-1

OCN PODCASTS
On Theologically Thinking, when we hear stories of judgment and sin in the Scriptures, most of us don’t want to admit the Lord is speaking to us. It is easier for us to adopt the attitude of the Pharisee (Luke 18.10-14) by thanking God we aren’t like those other people. But the fact is we are sinners who depend upon the mercy of God and the sooner we understand that reality, the sooner we will go away justified by the Lord. On Special Moments in Orthodoxy, Fr. Christopher Stamas, Pastor of Saint George Cathedral in Springfield, Massachusetts offers his words on the beginning of the Triodion, having a humble conversation and exchange with God. On Harmony of Thunder: Every now and then, one comes across a sermon that has something genuinely surprising in it. On this week's Harmony of Thunder, Fr. David looks at a sermon of St. Gregory Palamas that has an unexpected point to make.
