THE SOUNDING SOUND OFF
How important are youth groups in our efforts to keep our kids in the faith? Add your voice to a growing conversation on The Sounding and Facebook that started this week in response to a post by Christina Pessemier, “The First Step in Evangelizing Orthodoxy—Stronger, More Vibrant Youth Groups” (http://blog.myocn.com/ministries/youth-young-adult/the-first-step-in-evangelizing-orthodoxy-stronger-more-vibrant-youth-groups.html). Hollie Benton brings us Part 3 in her wonderful series titled “Let the Little Children Come Unto Me” (http://blog.myocn.com/home-and-family/parenting/let-the-little-children-come-unto-me-part-3.html). This time, she’s addressing techniques for 2-5-year-olds. Fr. Ernesto shares his sense of the importance of priests addressing difficult issues, in “Politics and Orthodox Clergy” (http://blog.myocn.com/current-topics/politics-and-orthodox-clergy.html). OCN PODCASTS
On Theologically Thinking, Fr. Athanasios Haros from the Transfiguration Church in Florence, SC shares a message entitled “Be Bold for JESUS!” When Jesus works His wonders, it deserves a bold response. After being healed, the Paralytic never faltered in his boldness to confess Jesus as the one who healed him. In the face of the Sanhedrin, the Apostles Peter and John never faltered in their boldness to confess Jesus. Are you ready to be bold for Jesus? On Just Thinking, Fr. Alkiviades Calivas speaks with our Emmy Louvaris about the little-known feast of Mid-Pentecost, which falls on the 25th day of Pascha. It is here at Mid-Pentecost, where Christ, "in the middle of the feast," teaches people of His saving mission.

The Orthodox Christian Network has been an official agency of SCOBA since 2003 and is now working within the Assembly of Bishops. Originally commissioned by SCOBA to create a national, sustainable and effective media witness for Orthodox Christianity throughout North America, OCN produces the only nationally syndicated Orthodox Christian radio broadcast, as well as several other outreach programs, including DVDs and internet-based media, in direct collaboration with sister assembly agencies (e.g., IOCC, OCMC, OCF, OCPM), as well as with various Orthodox Christian jurisdictions and pan-Orthodox, para-church organizations. Our goal is to engage the broader culture of North America with Orthodox Christianity’s rich theological, spiritual, and moral heritage, and to thereby strengthen the Orthodox Church’s witness and contribution to the culture in which we live.

OCN PODCASTS
On Theologically Thinking, Fr. Athanasios Haros from the Transfiguration Church in Florence, SC tells us that it requires courage and devotion to grow the church. In response to the Good News of Christ’s glorious resurrection Joseph of Arimathea and the Myrrh-Bearing Women displayed great courage and determination in the face of fear. The early Church, faced with a growing Church with administrative challenges, displayed courage and determination to continue the evangelistic ministry of the Church. Now it’s our turn to show courage and determination to grow the Church, in our own hearts and parishes. On Special Moments in Orthodoxy, Fr. Vasilios Thermos discusses Spirituality in Heresies and Sects. Fr. Vasilios is a psychotherapist who especially deals with the role of emotion in seducing people into sects and heresies.

OCN Programs for April 30-May 4

THIS WEEK FROM THE ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN NETWORK

COME RECEIVE THE LIGHT - THE NATIONALLY SYNDICATED RADIO PROGRAM OF ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY
We’re joined this week by two missionaries. First, Fr. Ernesto Obregon shares about some of the miraculous events he witnessed during his time in South America, as well as the connection he sees between missionary work and miracles. Then we’ll hear from Sister Nektaria, a Greek nun who runs an orphanage just outside Calcutta, India, about her work and personal faith.
******************
THE SOUNDING SOUND OFF
We’re excited to offer an amazing video created by Justin Daniel, who witnessed the descent of the Holy Fire in Jerusalem on Holy Saturday, 2011. “The Holy Fire and Pascha at the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem” puts you inside the church where the miracle occurs, and is something you won’t want to miss (http://blog.myocn.com/travel-blogs/lenten-journey-through-the-holy-land/the-holy-fire-and-pascha-at-the-holy-sepulchre-in-jerusalem-video.html). In another stunning contribution to The Sounding, Dr. Maria Khoury’s “‘60 Minutes’ Inspired by Tour of St. George Byzantine Church” recounts her part in the making of the highly acclaimed CBS piece on the last Christians in the Holy Land, which aired this past week. Links to video of the show can be found in her post (http://blog.myocn.com/current-topics/60-minutes-inspired-by-tour-of-st-george-byzantine-church.html). Hollie Benton offers some wonderful suggestions in the second post in her series on helping our children be happy in church, “Let the Little Children Come Unto Me, Part 2” (http://blog.myocn.com/home-and-family/parenting/let-the-little-children-come-unto-me-part-2.html). The Sounding publishes new content every weekday, and often on Saturday as well. Come and enjoy yourself at http://blog.myocn.com.

OCN PODCASTS
On Theologically Thinking, we’ll hear how, during the first days of Pascha, the Apostles were overcome with fear and doubt. But when the Risen Christ appeared to them in the room, He gave them His peace. The peace of God is that inner quietness and stillness that washes away our fear so that faith can rule our hearts. That faith in the Risen Christ leads us to accomplish wonders for the glory of God and His Church. The Apostles “HAD” fear until they allowed Christ’s peace to enter their hearts. Now it’s our turn to welcome and embrace Christ’s peace in our hearts. Now it’s our turn to do wonders and bring multitudes to Him so they can find peace. On Journey to Orthodoxy, Christa Belyaev relates how she fell in love with Russia at an early age. When she finished college, she was determined to pursue her dream of living there. As a girl with a strong Evangelical background, she sought out a local community of Protestants in Moscow where she eventually became a missionary. When divisive leaders began to arise in her Church, Christa was forced to question what the true Church ought to look like. She found more than she expected in Russia.

OCN PODCASTS
On Theologically Thinking, Fr. Frank Marangos shares his message, “The Heroism of Sacrifice.” Holy Week commemorates the sacrificial passion of Jesus Christ. His crucifixion marks a historical occurrence that, arguably, has had a greater enduring impact on humanity than any other religious deed. What gives sacrifice such influential power? And what does it mean to be a leader who is willing to sacrifice his/her own needs and desires for the benefit of his/her constituents and for the greater good of humanity? The full text of Fr. Marangos article will be available on myocn.net. On Special Moments in Orthodoxy, Fr. Christopher presents his message "A Titanic Lie." One hundred years ago, the "unsinkable" Titanic sank in the Atlantic -- a reminder that hubris is no match for humility. On OCN NOW, Assembly of Bishops Research Coordinator Alexei Krindatch speaks to Fr. Christopher about a new 40-page report titled “Five Interesting Facts About Orthodox Church Geography and Demography in the United States.” Also don’t forget Readings and Remembrances daily podcast is back! Tune in each day to hear the Scriptural Readings and lives of the Saints celebrated on that day.

- Offer a donation from a parish philanthropic organization or outreach fund.

OCN ISSUES VIDEO RESPONSE TO YOUTUBE VIDEO “WHY I HATE RELIGION BUT LOVE JESUS.”
Recently, an anti-religion video entitled Why I Hate Religion But Love Jesus received national attention after going viral and getting over 20 million views on YouTube. Its main points are as follows:
- Jesus came to abolish religion.
- God called religious people whores.
- Religion tells divorced moms that God doesn't love them.
- The church doesn't feed the poor.
- That religion starts wars.
If the video had only received a few hundred views with that kind of nonsense, we would have ignored it. But with over twenty million views and counting, we felt that we had an obligation to explain why none of that is historically or theologically accurate.
With Easter fast approaching, we have decided to fight YouTube video with YouTube video, with a response that fights fiction with facts. We are asking Christians all over the United States to send this response video to as many people as possible through email, Facebook, Twitter, and any other social media services. Visit our site to see it or watch it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJFSKMgtLk0.

JOIN O.C.N. FOR A JOURNEY OF FAITH TO TURKEY
OCN and Rev. Dr. Christopher Metropulos are hosting a pilgrimage to the glittering jewel of Asia Minor and the heart of Orthodoxy, Constantinople, June 5-13, 2012! For 9 days and 8 nights, visit the 17th century Greek Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate where you will bear witness to its solemn existence, spiritual strength, and religious devotion. Pray at the St. George Cathedral and venerate the Holy Relics of St. Gregory the Theologian and St. John Chrysostom restored back to the Patriarchate after being forcibly removed by the 4th Crusaders in 1204. See the relics of the three female Saints - Euphemia, Solomone and Theophano. Among other highlights in the Cathedral are the throne of the Ecumenical Patriarch, the column of Christ's flogging, and the famous icon of the Theotokos from the Byzantine Church of Pammakaristos. Participate in a private audience with His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew (subject to his availability).
Visit the most important sites for the Greek Orthodox in Constantinople: Agia Sophia – the most important church in the Christian world; the Church of the Holy Savior of Chora - second most important Byzantine Church in Istanbul, known for its magnificent mosaics and frescoes; Baloukli Monastery and its Underground Shrine of Zoodochos Peghe; Topkapı Palace housing the relics of St. John the Baptist; Panagia Blacherna Church where the beautiful hymn “Te Ypermacho” was chanted over 1,400 years ago; and the Grand Bazaar.
Our spiritual journey will also take us to Cappadocia! Cappadocia is a geological wonderland sculpted by erosion into a lunar landscape of natural arches, towering obelisks, bizarre castles and cones, and gigantic stone mushrooms. It became an area of refuge for persecuted Christians as early as the second century, and by the fourth, it had produced several important saints. St. Basil was one who taught in the Goreme Valley and who served as Bishop of Kayseri. Into the rocky moonscape of Cappadocia, the Christians carved out caves and, later, churches that were decorated with coned ceilings, graceful columns, and impressive frescoes. Labyrinthine underground cities grew, carved from the soft volcanic stone where Christians hid in the caves and underground cities to avoid persecution. We will also visit Kaymakli - one of the largest underground cities used as a sanctuary for an entire community from invading armies; the Goreme Open Air Museum - a moonscape volcanic valley filled with richly painted monastic churches hollowed from the soft volcanic stone; the old Greek village of Sinassos with its surviving church, St. Constantine and St. Helen; the Zelve Open Air Museum consisting of former dwellings and churches; and more.
Your final stop will be Smyrni, where you will see the old Greek neighborhood with its homes still empty after the “Catastrophe” of 1922. Between the Catastrophe and the Population Exchange, the Greek presence in Asia Minor was eliminated - a presence that had existed for over two millennia. Included is also a full-day tour to the ancient site of Ephesus, the most well-preserved ancient Greco-Roman city in the world! Walk through this ancient city, down a marble road rutted by the wheels of countless chariots, pass architectural masterpieces like the Magnesian Gate and the Library of Celsius before arriving at the Great Amphitheater where St. Paul was arrested and cast out of the city. Visit the Basilica of St. John the Theologian and where he is buried. You will also visit the House of the Virgin Mary where Catholics believe she spent the last years of her life.
Join us for this spiritual journey through Turkey! Look for more details coming on myocn.net and also watch for a travel blog during the pilgrimage.

CRTL Schedule for April 2012

March 30
Speaker: Fr. Demetrios Tonias
Topic: Theology of Miracles
We begin our month-long look at miracles by asking Fr. Demetrios Tonias some general questions about miracles. Why does God perform miracles? Why do miracles sometimes happen to people who don’t believe? How should miracles impact our faith?

April 6
Speaker: Fr. Barnabas Powell
Topic: From Speaking in Tongues to Tearing Icons
How does our religious affiliation affect our experience of miracles? Hear what Fr. Barnabas Powell thinks, who has witnessed a number of miracles both back when he was a Pentecostal pastor and now as an Orthodox priest. But first, we’ll prepare ourselves for Holy Week with Fr. John Behr who will help us better understand the significance of Christ’s words from the Cross.

April 13 (Pascha Show)
Speaker: Fr. John Morris
Topic: Why did Christ have to die?
Why did Christ have to die? Many of us learned an answer back in our Sunday School days, but how much have we really reflected on the question since then? Tune in to hear not only an Orthodox answer to the question, but also to learn how it compares to the teachings of other Christian churches.

April 20
Speaker: Fr. John McGuckin
Topic: Teachings of the Resurrected Christ
Christ was with His disciples for only a short time after His Resurrection before He ascended to be with His Father. How did He spend that time? Join us as we ask Fr. John McGuckin about the teachings of the Resurrected Christ. But first, we continue our month-long discussion of miracles with Prof. Stamatis Vokos. He’s with us to offer his perspective on the miralcuous as  both a scientist and devout believer.

April 27
Speaker: Sister Nektaria
Topic: Orphanage in Calcutta
We’re joined this week by two missionaries. First, Fr. Ernesto Obregon shares about some of the miraculous events he witnessed during his time in South America, as well as the connection he sees between missionary work and miracles. Then we’ll hear from Sister Nektaria, a Greek nun who runs an orphanage just outside Calcutta, India, about her work and personal faith.

OCN PODCASTS
On Theologically Thinking, Fr. Athanasios Haros of the Transfiguration Church in Florence, SC will speak on “The Feast of Annunciation; A Celebration for All Humanity.” When the Archangel Gabriel brought the Good News of the coming of God into the world, the war for our independence from death and the bondage of Hades was initiated. When the Greeks, feeling the pressure of oppression from the Ottoman Empire, found the courage to stand up to their oppressors, there was no more fitting date than March 25th, the Feast of Annunciation, to symbolize their fight for freedom. Today is our chance to declare freedom from the oppression of the devil and all his demons. Today is our chance to stand up to evil and fight for the truth of God. Today is the crown of our salvation. On Just Thinking, Fr. Christopher Metropoulos speaks with Rod Dreher to distinguish our wants from our needs in this discussion about Fasting during Great Lent. We also are pleased to announce that the Readings and Remembrances daily podcast is back! Tune in each day to hear the Scriptural Readings and lives of the Saints celebrated on that day.

Christina Pessemier, now posting weekly, takes on “Professionals Peddling Porn,” (http://blog.myocn.com/culture/pop-culture/professionals-peddling-porn.html) providing a strong argument and good resources for combatting the problem. Fr. Ernesto Obregon shows how two knife-wielding uncles and a group of Orthodox priests can teach us to stop judging each other’s political views in “One in Christ, Divided in Politics.”(http://blog.myocn.com/orthodoxy-basics/one-in-christ-divided-in-politics.html.) The Sounding publishes new content every weekday. Stop by to read and comment at http://blog.myocn.com

JOIN O.C.N. FOR A JOURNEY OF FAITH TO TURKEY
OCN and Rev. Dr. Christopher Metropulos are hosting a pilgrimage to the glittering jewel of Asia Minor and the heart of Orthodoxy, Constantinople, June 5-13, 2012! For 9 days and 7 nights, visit the 17th century Greek Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate where you will bear witness to its solemn existence, spiritual strength, and religious devotion. Pray at the St George Cathedral and venerate the Holy Relics of St. Gregory the Theologian and St. John Chrysostom restored back to the Patriarchate after being forcibly removed by the 4th Crusaders in 1204. See the relics of the three female Saints - Euphemia, Solomone, and Theophano.
Visit the most important sites for the Greek Orthodox in Constantiniople: Agia Sophia – the most important church in the Christian world; the Church of the Holy Savior of Chora - second most important  Byzantine Church in Istanbul, known for its magnificent mosaics and frescoes; Baloukli Monastery and its Underground Shrine of Zoodochos Peghe; Topkapı Palace housing the relics of St. John the Baptist; Panagia Blacherna Church where the beautiful hymn, “Te Ypermacho” was chanted over 1,400 years ago; and the Grand Bazaar.
Our spiritual journey will also take us to Cappadocia! Cappadocia is a geological wonderland sculpted by erosion into a lunar landscape of natural arches, towering obelisks, bizarre castles and cones, and gigantic stone mushrooms.  It became an area of refuge for persecuted Christians as early as the second century and by the fourth, it had produced several important saints. St Basil was one who taught in the Goreme Valley and who served as Bishop of Kayseri.
