THIS WEEK FROM THE ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN NETWORK
COME RECEIVE THE LIGHT - THE NATIONALLY SYNDICATED RADIO PROGRAM OF ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY
If you watch the news, you may think that Christmas has always been the most important celebration of Christians. But is that true? Fr. Athanasius Iskander of St. Mary's Coptic Orthodox Church in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, joins Fr. Chris for a talk about the Nativity's historic role in Christian life and worship. But first, we'll hear Fr. Chris' Nativity sermon.

THE SOUNDING SOUND OFF
All of us on The Sounding wish you the most blessed and peaceful feast! In honor of the Nativity, Sylvia Leontaritis offers a “retreat in a blog post,” sharing many wonderful stories the Orthodox know about this special day. See how many of these stories you know, in “Christmas 101: An Orthodox Christian Understanding (http://www.soundingblog.com/index.php/orthodoxy-basics/christmas-101-an-orthodox-christian-understanding.html). And Fr. Ernesto reminds us of all the helpers who are serving us while we celebrate our feast day, in “Those Who Serve During Christmas” (http://www.soundingblog.com/index.php/home-and-family/traditions/those-who-serve-during-christmas.html). On Theologically Thinking, Fr. Hildo Bos, author of For the Peace from Above, shares what early Christians wrote about peace, faith, and war. On Special Moments in Orthodoxy, join us for one of Fr. Chris’ earlier recorded messages on the Nativity, “Are we ready for God to be with us?" Although this message is part of our archives, it continues to be relevant.
Join Roger Hunt for Daily Readings and Remembrances. Each day, we will read the Holy Scriptures and the lives of the Saints. This week, featured Saints will include Theodore the Confessor, Marcellus, Ancia, and others. Please join us on The Orthodox Christian Network, myocn.net.
On CRTL Greek: The joy that stems from the eternal love of our God is such that because of it, we walk through our cities and sing it. Door to door. The Divine Nativity is a message of Hope that cannot be kept as a secret. It is a light that has to shine upon our loneliness and hopelessness. The carols serve this purpose these days. Letʼs open our doors to the carol singers and rejoice for their good news!

Helping Christians at Christmas

OCN HELP ON A WHITE HOUSE PETITION TO HELP CHRISTIANS AT CHRISTMAS
Dear Fr. Chris,
Good morning. I pray that this message finds you well. I'm writing to ask your help through OCN in securing signatures on a petition to President Obama to respond to the deprivations in religious freedom which are endured by religious minorities in the greater Middle East.
The petition focuses, in particular, on Christians in the greater Middle East, the region where Christ was born, a region where many Christians face near extinction, and the region in which the four ancient Patriarchates of Constantinople, Jerusalem, Antioch, and Alexandria now struggle to survive. The situation of persecution and oppression which confronts our Ecumenical Patriarchate is emblematic of the general conditions faced by Christians throughout the greater Middle East.
As Christmas approaches, how can we, in good conscience, avert our gaze and say and do nothing when Christians in the greater Middle East are persecuted and, in so many cases, will face grave difficulties in celebrating the Nativity?
According to the White House rules, if a minimum of 25,000 people sign the petition, the White House will be required to issue a response. Given the incredible reach and serious reputation of OCN, you could help to accomplish the goal of 25,000 signatures. In this way, the White House would come to understand that there are thousands of people, Christians and non-Christians alike, who are committed to religious freedom for each and every person in the world and who, in this case, are willing to act now to voice their concern for Christians who are unable to celebrate Christ's birth in the lands of Christianity's origin. Are we, as Orthodox Christians, ready to stand for religious freedom? We must do this for our fellow Orthodox Christians and, likewise, for every single person in the world who is deprived of this universal human right of freedom of conscience, belief, and religion.
http://hellenicleaders.com/blog/a-call-to-action-this-christmas-season/
By clicking the above URL, readers can find the petition and instructions about how to sign online, so that we can remember and solicit protection for Christians in the place of Christ's birth. The situation is urgent, and I am confident that we can reach the 25,000 threshold, if we work together.
With warm regards to you and your family for a peaceful and healthy Christmas,
Very sincerely,
Elizabeth

As we grieve for the families in Newtown, Connecticut and try to hold onto the light in this special season, here is a beautiful Orthodox Nativity hymn, in English, to bring you joy and peace: “Nativity Katavasies ‘Christ is Born! Glorify Him!’” (http://blogs.myocn.net/index.php/orthodoxy-basics/nativity-katavasies-christ-is-born-glorify-him-video.html). Fr. Stavros Akrotirianakis ponders the prevalence of anger and the power of peace in “Reflections on the Connecticut School Shooting” (http://blogs.myocn.net/index.php/current-topics/reflections-on-the-connecticut-school-shooting.html). Bev Cooke offers a powerful reminder of what saves us when evil is all around, in “And a Sword Will Pierce Your Soul” (http://blogs.myocn.net/index.php/orthodoxy-basics/and-a-sword-will-pierce-your-soul.html). We wish you the blessing of peace and the safekeeping of everyone you love in this Nativity Season. We look forward to seeing you at our new address, http://blogs.myocn.net.

These week-long mission trips are a great way to get college students involved globally and learn more about Orthodoxy around the world.

This week’s featured Saints will include Juliana of Nicomedia and her 630 companion martyrs, Anastasia, Eugenia, and others. Please join us on The Orthodox Christian Network, myocn.net.
On CRTL Greek: For many years Jesus has been a stranger to us. Although he lived among us, healed our wounds, diminished our darkness with His light, we keep on treating Him like a stranger, like his compatriots did when He visited His village to preach the coming of His Kingdom. Christmas is a chance, in fact a present from Him to us, to get to know Him, or shall I say for us to be known by Him?

On Theologically Thinking, noted scholar Fr. John McGuckin discusses “What is Christmas without Christ?” On Special Moment in Orthodoxy, Fr. John Braun speaks with Fr. Christopher Metropulos to answer the question "Why a Baby in a Manger?" Listen in to hear Fr. John discuss the way this question pertains to who died on the Cross.
Join Roger Hunt for Daily Readings and Remembrances. Each day, we will read the Holy Scriptures and the lives of the Saints. This week will feature Saints Herman, Thyrsus, Eleutherius, Haggai, and others. Please join us on The Orthodox Christian Network, myocn.net.
On CRTL Greek: Fasting and repentance are the issues discussed in this week’s program. The process of repenting is not simple. It is painful and yet most rewarding, since it is the only way to allow Holy Grace to enter and purify our soul, and our relations with ourselves, with our fellows, and with God Himself. Repentance is not to be considered and practiced only in fasting periods though, as it is a lifetime and life-changing process. It is God's gift to us, and should be treated as such.

It is here at Mid-Pentecost, where Christ, "in the middle of the feast," teaches people of his saving mission. On Theologically Thinking, Fr. William Chiganos of the Holy Apostles Church in Westchester, IL talks to us about finding our identity in the light of Christ. Let's rediscover the wonder of life in the Birth of our Savior, so that not only do we know ourselves, but that God knows us also.
Join Roger Hunt for Daily Readings and Remembrances. Each day, we will read the Holy Scriptures and the lives of the Saints. This week will feature readings from St. Paul’s letters to Timothy, the Hebrews, and the Galatians, and from the Gospel according to St. Luke; featured Saints include Nicholas the Wonderworker; Ambrose, bishop of Milan; Daniel the Stylite; and others. Please join us on The Orthodox Christian Network, myocn.net.
On CRTL Greek: There are some ethical matters to be dealt with in this week's program. Every Christian faces certain challenges during fasting times, such as the doubt whether God will reward his/her efforts, or will punish him/her for not remaining true to Christian principles. This program is trying to clarify once more that God's eternal love diminishes the darkness of doubt, provided that we repent truly in our heart and take active part in the Church's Divine Mysteries.

CRTL Greek: We Orthodox Christians this time of each year are passing through the fasting period so that we purify our souls to receive the Holy Communion during the Divine Liturgy at Christmas Day. We are struggling to fight our passions, as they are preventing us from Gods love. One of those passions that have to be dealt with is anger. Thankfully God has not left us without assistance. The Holy Bible, our Holy Tradition is giving lots of directions so that with the help of the Holy Spirit we can manage to deal with anger, which by the way prevails these days of ours. This program is attempting to deal with some aspects of this matter.

Originally commissioned by SCOBA to create a national, sustainable and effective media witness for Orthodox Christianity throughout North America, OCN produces the only nationally syndicated Orthodox Christian radio broadcast, as well as several other outreach programs, including DVDs and internet-based media, in direct collaboration with sister assembly agencies (e.g., IOCC, OCMC, OCF, OCPM), as well as with various Orthodox Christian jurisdictions and pan-Orthodox, para-church organizations. Our goal is to engage the broader culture of North America with Orthodox Christianity’s rich theological, spiritual, and moral heritage, and to thereby strengthen the Orthodox Church’s witness and contribution to the culture in which we live.
