OCN Programs for April 1-5

THIS WEEK FROM THE ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN NETWORK

COME RECEIVE THE LIGHT - THE NATIONALLY SYNDICATED RADIO PROGRAM OF ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY
Metropolitan Tikhon, Primate of the Orthodox Church in America, joins us for the second part of his 6-week look at the Sundays of Great and Holy Lent. He speaks this week about the Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas. Plus, how did a New Age seeker wind up in the Eastern Orthodox Church? Tune in this week as we begin our month-long look at personal narratives of faith. We begin with Veronica Hughes, who began her spiritual journey as a Roman Catholic, then turned to alternative medicine treatment, the teachings of a guru, meditation, Eastern religions, and metaphysics. What brought her to Orthodoxy over a decade ago? You’ll have to tune in to find out!

On Harmony of Thunder, we explore the importance of St. Gregory Palamas, the theme for the second Sunday of Lent, in “The Sermons of St. Gregory Palamas.”
Exploring the Monthly Theme of Personal Narratives of Faith, we hear the story of Garett Walker as he journeys through several churches before finding a home in Orthodoxy on Journey to Orthodoxy.
Join Roger Hunt for Daily Readings and Remembrances. Each day, we will read the Holy Scriptures and the lives of the Saints. This week, featured Saints will include John Climacus, Hypatios, Titus, and others. Please join us on The Orthodox Christian Network, myocn.net.
On CRTL Greek, Dimitris Karavasilis discusses the concepts of health and sickness as they are being revealed by the story of the paralytic and his four friends. What is the source of the sickness? How can we be healed? Is the love of our friends helpful? Join Dimitris as he tries to answer these questions with the help of the Bible and the wisdom of the Holy Fathers.
On the second episode of Vengan a Recibir la Luz/CRTL Spanish, hosts Fr. Aristidis Arizi and Fr. David Wooten, together with special guest Fr. Antonio Perdomo, address the question "What is Fasting?" The Polyeleios hymn, sung by the children of the Hogar Rafael Ayau Orphanage in Guatemala, and the Trisagion Prayers, sung by the choir of St. George Cathedral in Mexico City, follow. Finally, Fr. Michael Marcantoni reads the episode's Epistle reading (Galatians 4:22-27) and Gospel reading (Luke 13:10-17), then gives a sermon on the Gospel entitled "Every Day is a Day for Mercy."

OCN PODCASTS
As we focus on the Sunday of Forgiveness, we listen to edifying words on the topic from Fr. Spiro Bobotas as he delivers the message “The Gift of Forgiveness” on Theologically Thinking. Continuing our theme of New Beginnings, we follow the story of how David Schneider discovered the True Faith on Journeys to Orthodoxy.
Join Roger Hunt for Daily Readings and Remembrances. Each day, we will read the Holy Scriptures and the lives of the Saints. This week, featured Saints will include Agapios, Patrick, Savinos, and others. Please join us on The Orthodox Christian Network, myocn.net.
On CRTL Greek, Dimitris Karavasilis discusses the three crucial points of the Sunday of Forgiveness. First, the forgiveness itself is a gift from God to us all, and as such should be offered to our fellow humans. The second point is the true meaning of Lent, because this definition will clarify our understanding and assist us in our efforts from now on to meet our risen Lord. The final point concerns our attitude toward material possessions, we seek to find our heart to locate our treasure.

NEW PODCAST – OUR LIFE IN CHRIST AND IN AMERICA
"Our life in Christ and in America," hosted by Bill Hinkle, is a show that will address the common conflicts between our faith and the political life in America. So often we get pulled into waging battles that may not be part of our vocation as Orthodox Christians. All types of voices flood our ears, but what is our calling, and how do we balance our lives as Orthodox Christians and citizens of the freest country in the world? In the first episode, Bill speaks with the priest who introduced him and his family to the Orthodox faith back in 1999: Fr. George Livanos, the pastor of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Washington, PA.

OCN PODCASTS
The Prodigal Son discovered a new beginning through unexpected forgiveness. On Harmony of Thunder, Fr. David Smith describes the way St. Gregory Palamas interpreted this important parable. On Worship in Spirit and Truth, join Dr. Demetrios Katos as he discusses "Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at Hand." March marks the beginning of Spring, a period of renewal and a preface to the blessings that we will enjoy in the experience of our Lord’s passion and resurrection and the out-pouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The spiritual renewal, however, is not an automatic result of the season it requires some effort.
Join Roger Hunt for Daily Readings and Remembrances. Each day, we will read the Holy Scriptures and the lives of the Saints. This week featured Saints will include Procopios and Basil the confessors, John Cassian, and others.
On CRTL Greek, Dimitris Karavasilis offers some insight into the issues that spring from the parable of the prodigal son. He deals with matters such as the father being so compassionate, so ready to forgive, so eager to reunite with his son, and the older brother who was self-justified until the time that the return of his young brother proved to him how wrongly he had figured everything in his life.

The Orthodox Christian Network is an official agency of the Assembly of Bishops, and originally commissioned by SCOBA, to create a national, sustainable, and effective media witness for Orthodox Christianity throughout North America. In a constantly changing media landscape, OCN delivers positive, relevant Orthodox content via multiple delivery platforms, reaching today’s internet users via broadcast, podcast, video, blogging, and webinar content. “Come Receive the Light,” OCN’s flagship program hosted by Fr. Christopher Metropulos, is the only nationally syndicated Orthodox Christian radio broadcast. OCN works in direct collaboration with Sister Assembly agencies (e.g., IOCC, OCMC, OCF, OCPM), as well as with various Orthodox Christian jurisdictions and pan-Orthodox, para-church organizations. Our goal is to engage the broader culture of North America with Orthodox Christianity’s rich theological, spiritual, and moral heritage, and to thereby strengthen the Orthodox Church’s witness and contribution to the culture in which we live.

THE SOUNDING SOUND OFF
Sounding blogger Christy Pessemier had some strong words for the makers of this year’s Super Bowl commercials. See what you think of “2013 Super Bowl Commercials Dishonor Women and Bring American Standards to a New Low” (http://www.soundingblog.com/index.php/culture/pop-culture/2013-super-bowl-commercials-dishonor-women-and-bring-american-standards-to-a-new-low.html). Guest poster Julia Wickes reflects on what she learned from walking around a lake, saying her prayers, with a baby on her back, in “The Door of Lovingkindness” (http://www.soundingblog.com/index.php/orthodoxy-basics/the-door-of-lovingkindess.html). Fr. Vasile Tudora describes something disturbing he saw at a school talent show, in “The Great Confusion – reflections on the disruption of God’s order in our lives” (http://www.soundingblog.com/index.php/home-and-family/the-great-confusion-reflections-on-the-disruption-of-gods-order-in-our-lives.html). We are happy to welcome each one of you to our community at www.soundingblog.com. You can also visit with us on The Sounding Orthodox Blog Facebook page.

OCN PODCASTS
On Special Moments in Orthodoxy, we have a new youth contributor, Jessie Beddoe, who presents “In a New York State of Mind.” A visit to the Big Apple becomes an occasion to explore the deepest instincts of her faith. On Theologically Thinking, Keith Massey, PhD, presents “Be Mine, St. Valentine,” a travelogue and theological reflection on an early Christian Martyr. He’s become misunderstood, to be sure. But in a good way.
Join Roger Hunt for Daily Readings and Remembrances. Each day, we will read the Holy Scriptures and the lives of the Saints. This week featured Saints will include Zecharias, Nicephorus, Heralampus, and others. Please join us on The Orthodox Christian Network, myocn.net.
On CRTL Greek, Dimitris Karavasilis discusses St Simeon's saying to Virgin Mary about our Lord. Among others things, he said that "This child is destined to...be a sign that will be spoken against" Luke 2:33. How is this prophecy true even in our times? What are its consequences to our lives?

WELCOME TO 4 MORE NEW PARTNERS!

THIS WEEK FROM THE ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN NETWORK
COME RECEIVE THE LIGHT - THE NATIONALLY SYNDICATED RADIO PROGRAM OF ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY
Kh. Frederica Matthewes-Green is back on the show today to talk with us about keeping a personal prayer rule. She’ll offer helpful tips on starting and maintaining a personal prayer rule, as well as some advice on how to build up the whole family’s prayer life. But first Fr. Harry Pappas, Adjunct Professor of Pastoral Theology at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, walks us through the Book of Psalms. What are some of the central spiritual teachings? How can we make sense of the violence contained in many Psalms? And how can something written centuries before Jesus’ birth reflect our Christian theology?

THE SOUNDING SOUND OFF
If you’d like to take a break from your daily life and read something spiritually refreshing, we recommend Sylvia Leontaritis’ latest post, about the day she finally got a chance to see the “Miraculous Icon: Theotokos Iveron of Hawaii” (http://www.soundingblog.com/index.php/orthodoxy-basics/miraculous-icon-theotokos-iveron-of-hawaii.html). Kelly Lardin brings us another great children’s project, complete with a video demonstration, for this week’s Feast of the Presentation: “Meeting of the Lord: Candle Project (VIDEO)” (http://www.soundingblog.com/index.php/education/meeting-of-the-lord-candle-project.html). And Fr. Lawrence asks a question, with a less than obvious answer, in “What’s wrong with Westboro Baptist?” (http://www.soundingblog.com/index.php/culture/pop-culture/whats-wrong-with-westboro-baptist.html). We’re excited to see so many new readers on the blog this month! It has been a wonderful start to 2013, and we look forward to sharing this year with you at www.soundingblog.com.

OCN PODCASTS
On the theme of Prayer, we offer the following edifying podcasts. On Theologically Thinking, Fr. Stanley Harakas will discuss the Prayer before and after Holy Communion in the Orthodox faith. On Special Moments in Orthodoxy, Fr. Thomas Hopko presents a reflection on the Lord’s Prayer.
Join Roger Hunt for Daily Readings and Remembrances. Each day, we will read the Holy Scriptures and the lives of the Saints. This week featured Saints will include Trypho, Isadore, Simeon and Anna, and others. Please join us on The Orthodox Christian Network, myocn.net.
On CRTL Greek, Dimitris Karavasilis explores St John's Chrysostom teachings concerning the youth. He describes his time in Antioch and explains how parents along with society were "poisoning" the youth with ideals very far from the ones our Lord offered. We are trying to find any similarities with the youth of our time, in an attempt to prevent young people from destroying themselves once more.

Find out why in “What Occupation is Better for the Soul?” (http://www.soundingblog.com/index.php/missions/international/cloud-of-witnesses/what-occupation-is-better-for-the-soul.html). As America swears its President into a second term of office, Fr. Ernesto reminds us the Orthodox perspective on public officials, in “Government and Our Most Orthodox Duty” (http://www.soundingblog.com/index.php/culture/government-and-our-most-orthodox-duty.html). And Hollie Benton remembers a frightening but beautiful moment when her daughter showed extraordinary strength, in “Written on Her Heart” (http://www.soundingblog.com/index.php/orthodoxy-basics/bible/scripture-written-on-her-heart.html).
