Join Fr. David Smith this week on Harmony of Thunder. In the Divine Liturgy, when the priest summons the people to Holy Communion, he sings, “With fear of God, and faith, and love, draw ye near.” Does it seem odd to you that the first thing mentioned is fear? In his sermon “On the Fear of God,” St. Dorotheos of Gaza explores the need of all Christians to fear God. This great desert saint wanted to impart to the monks under his care the supreme importance of understanding what it meant to fear God as a part of the spiritual life. This week's Harmony of Thunder listens in as he preaches his "On the Fear of God" sermon. Don't miss it!"

On Harmony of Thunder, Fr. David tells the story of two Christians who have stood up in the public sphere for what they believed - one in the courts and one in the media. Would St. Basil the Great have done the same thing? Would he approve of Christians demanding respect in the public sphere? By all means! Listen to Harmony of Thunder to hear how similar our struggles today are with those of Christians in the fourth century.

On Harmony of Thunder: This week starts a three-week series looking at one particular sermon, "An Encomium on the Dormition of our Most Holy Lady, Mary, Mother of God and Ever Virgin by our Father the Holy Modestus, Archbishop of Jerusalem." This Orthodox podcast series will help Orthodox Christians as we prepare for the Theotokos fast and the feast of the Dormition. In the first program, we'll explore the ways in which a sermon can address the Dormition of the Theotokos using the whole text of scripture. It takes a great preacher to do this, and Patriarch Modestus… well, was certainly a great preacher!
