Parenting - May 2012
Dear Blessed people of God, We are in the throws of the last few weeks of school for millions of young people throughout the world. I for one will be happy to take a break from making the daily lunches for our kids...Yes, my wife passed this blessed task to me about ten years ago. But making sandwiches is really only a very small part of what I do as a Dad and Father. In fact my children call me Father Squared. Not because I am a square...ha ha but because I serve as their father and a spiritual father to thousands of folks in our parish. I believe it is a blessing from God to be a parent. Parenting is one of the most important roles any person can play so we decided to enlist the help of our staff and some fine minds and hearts around the world to offer their advice on this sacred topic. Our CRTL theme for May is Parenting. I don't know about you but I never took a course in parenting either in high school or college but I did learn a great deal from my parents and I must confess I am learning about it every day as I watch our six children and now two grandchildren grow and mature.

We’re joined this week by two missionaries. First, Fr. Ernesto Obregon shares about some of the miraculous events he witnessed during his time in South America, as well as the connection he sees between missionary work and miracles. Then we’ll hear from Sister Nektaria, a Greek nun who runs an orphanage just outside Calcutta, India, about her work and personal faith. This week, we continue our month-long discussion of miracles with Professor Stamatis Vokos. He’s with us to offer his perspective on the miraculous as both a scientist and devout believer. Dr. Vokos is a professor at Seattle Pacific University in the department of Physics.
Why did Christ have to die? Many of us learned an answer back in our Sunday School days, but how much have we really reflected on the question since then? Tune in to hear not only an Orthodox answer to the question, but also to learn how it compares to the teachings of other Christian churches.
How does our religious affiliation affect our experience of miracles? Fr. Barnabas Powell, a former Pentecostal pastor and now an Orthodox priest, has a broad and thought provoking perspective. But first, we’ll prepare ourselves for Holy Week with Fr. John Behr who will help us better understand the significance of Christ’s words from the Cross.
We begin our month-long look at miracles by asking Fr. Demetrios Tonias some general questions about miracles. Why does God perform miracles? Why do miracles sometimes happen to people who don’t believe? How should miracles impact our faith?
We finish up our monthly theme by hearing a Southern Baptist opinion of what it means to be a Christian. Join Fr. Chris as he speaks with Dr. Russell Moore, teaching pastor at Highview Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky. We’ll also reflect on the Annunciation of the Theotokos, which we celebrate this Sunday, with Fr. Costin Popescu.
We continue our month-long look at what it means to be a Christian with the Professor of Church History at the Assemblies of God Seminary. You will be surprised to hear the answers of our guests as they discuss with Fr. Chris what they believe about being a Christian, the Eucharist and the social hot buttons of the day. It is equally interesting to hear how much respect they have for the Orthodox Christian faith. But first, we’ll reflect on the Sunday of the Holy Cross, which we celebrate this weekend.
