Violence - July 2012

From the desk of Father Chris Metropulos, Executive Director of the Orthodox Christian Network

Dear Listeners,

This month on CRTL, we are going to tackle the topic of Violence.  You may think that we hear too much about violence already, and we do, but not from sources that can possibly explain the causes and effects from an Orthodox Christian perspective.  God created the world for salvation, not for violence, and it is essential to make this fact a part of our perspective.

We were created for a life of peace and worship of the Almighty and Loving God. Unfortunately, the pace of life today does not often allow us to stop what we are doing, savor the good things in our lives, and then go on to do what our Lord wants us to do. We become wrapped up in the business of life and forget that there is a joyful and fulfilling side to life that Christ wants us to live.
Our purpose is to live in communion with others, not isolated on our own island. But how can we do this? How can we live in peace in a world that seems so violent, so much at war with itself?

What is Marriage?

There’s so much talk today about what qualifies as a marriage. Today, we’ll talk with Father Brendan Pelphrey about our Orthodox understanding of what makes a marriage, what the purpose of a marriage is, and what makes a marriage successful in the eyes of Christ. But first, let’s talk about creating a successful relationship with our in-laws! Licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Randa Karadsheh Anderson offers some very practical suggestions about family boundaries.

Marriage - June 2012

From the desk of Father Chris Metropulos, Executive Director of the Orthodox Christian Network

Dear Blessed people of God,

Marriage, one of the holiest sacraments of the Christian Church, will be discussed this month on your Come Receive the Light Radio Program. From the beginning, God ordained that a man and a woman would join together in this sacrament and lead one another into His kingdom. Married couples work out their salvation together. There is nothing more sacred than a husband and wife striving to live out this difficult, beautiful teaching of our faith.
Here on Come Receive the Light, we will be talking about the sacrament of marriage, why it exists, why it is so important, where it came from, and what happens when there is confusion like that in our society today as to what defines a marriage in the eyes of God. We will even talk about in-laws, second marriages, step families, and alternative marriages. This promises to be one of our most engaging months of programming.
I try to always be positive in my words and thoughts to all, but I must confess to you my dismay that a small percentage of our population, about 3%, seem to feel they need to redefine the beliefs of our society as a whole, and that we who have been celebrating marriage as the union of a man and a woman should listen and change. As Orthodox Christians, it is our responsibility to pass on our faith to the next generation, to give to our children and grand-children what was given to us by our parents and grandparents. To support you as you strive to honor our faith in this way, we are dedicating this month to stepping back from today’s chaos and confusion so that we can focus the eyes of our hearts on the clear teachings of the Orthodox Church.
In the world we encounter daily, a Christian marriage has become almost an act of defiance. It is a choice against the prevailing mores. Very few people seem to have much use for what is sacred or lasting, or for anything that doesn’t bring gratification immediately. We are encouraged to live in the moment, as if the moment is all we’ll ever have. On this timeline, a 2000-year-old truth can seem hard to grasp.
