Back to School - August 2012

From the desk of Father Chris Metropulos, Executive Director of the Orthodox Christian Network

Dear Listeners,

The time has come to send our blessed offspring back to school.  It has been a wonderful summer and very busy.  As a parent, I welcome the time when our children will return to school, but I also know that I will miss spending this extra time with my precious children.  In the next week, they will return to the business of hectic academic, athletic, and social schedules.

We will be making lunches and packing their backpacks with all of the things they will need to get through each day.  My question to you is if we are preparing them to survive the day with such vigor, what are we doing to prepare them for their daily spiritual battle and, more importantly, their eternal life in Heaven?  I am afraid we spend more time with the backpacks than we do with their soul work. Do we pray with them? Do we share with them the Church calendar and the saints of the day?

Violence and Death

CRTL colorado-batman-shootingFr. Chris Margaritis, Dean of the Assumption Cathedral in Denver, Colorado, joins Fr. Chris for a discussion of the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado. They speak candidly of the shootings, the healing, and the theology of life after death from an Orthodox Christian perspective. Everyone at OCN expresses profound sorrow to the people who lost their loved ones in this tragedy and offers prayers for those who are still recovering. We encourage all of our listeners to offer prayers as well.

The recent horrific shooting spree in an Aurora movie theater is the springboard for a much broader conversation about the changing mores of our society, the church's view of tragedy in Godʼs bigger plan, and whether we can reverse this incredibly negative trend, as we wrap-up a month-long series on violence. The power of collective and directed prayer should never be underestimated.

To read and listen to more of our thoughts on this event, please visit The Sounding (http://blog.myocn.com). The Sounding blogger/podcaster, Christy Pessemier also shares her thoughts on the movie theater shootings in Aurora, Colorado in a special podcast entitled “Response to Colorado Shooting: Don’t Give Evil the Front Row Seat.” The full message will be featured as part of CRTL on myocn.net.

Violence - July 2012

From the desk of Father Chris Metropulos, Executive Director of the Orthodox Christian Network

Dear Listeners,

This month on CRTL, we are going to tackle the topic of Violence.  You may think that we hear too much about violence already, and we do, but not from sources that can possibly explain the causes and effects from an Orthodox Christian perspective.  God created the world for salvation, not for violence, and it is essential to make this fact a part of our perspective.

We were created for a life of peace and worship of the Almighty and Loving God. Unfortunately, the pace of life today does not often allow us to stop what we are doing, savor the good things in our lives, and then go on to do what our Lord wants us to do. We become wrapped up in the business of life and forget that there is a joyful and fulfilling side to life that Christ wants us to live.
Our purpose is to live in communion with others, not isolated on our own island. But how can we do this? How can we live in peace in a world that seems so violent, so much at war with itself?
