Theosis - September 2012

From the desk of Father Chris Metropulos, Executive Director of the Orthodox Christian Network

Dear Blessed people of God,

September for Orthodox Christians worldwide is the beginning of a new church or ecclesiastical year.  The faith of the Apostles places before us another wonderful opportunity to remake or rearrange our priorities.  This month, OCN will present a series of programs on New Beginnings and Theosis. For those who may not be Orthodox, you might be saying, “What is Theosis?”  Maybe those who are Orthodox Christians are hearing this word for the first time and want an explanation of it.  This month, that is exactly what we are going to do on our CRTL Programming.

We also present to you this month a new series of adult study classes held every Sunday in the Church of St. Demetrios, Ft. Lauderdale, the home of the OCN.  This class will be offered  between the end of the Orthros and beginning of the Divine Liturgy, starting at 10:00 AM ESTD.  The classes will be taught by yours truly, Fr. John Codis, and Joseph Olas, and we hope you will find them uplifting and rewarding.  Study guides will also be made available each week for download to our viewers and listeners. Don’t worry if you miss the study class on Sunday; you can always go to our archives and listen to it when you want.

Back to School - August 2012

From the desk of Father Chris Metropulos, Executive Director of the Orthodox Christian Network

Dear Listeners,

The time has come to send our blessed offspring back to school.  It has been a wonderful summer and very busy.  As a parent, I welcome the time when our children will return to school, but I also know that I will miss spending this extra time with my precious children.  In the next week, they will return to the business of hectic academic, athletic, and social schedules.

We will be making lunches and packing their backpacks with all of the things they will need to get through each day.  My question to you is if we are preparing them to survive the day with such vigor, what are we doing to prepare them for their daily spiritual battle and, more importantly, their eternal life in Heaven?  I am afraid we spend more time with the backpacks than we do with their soul work. Do we pray with them? Do we share with them the Church calendar and the saints of the day?

Violence and Death

CRTL colorado-batman-shootingFr. Chris Margaritis, Dean of the Assumption Cathedral in Denver, Colorado, joins Fr. Chris for a discussion of the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado. They speak candidly of the shootings, the healing, and the theology of life after death from an Orthodox Christian perspective. Everyone at OCN expresses profound sorrow to the people who lost their loved ones in this tragedy and offers prayers for those who are still recovering. We encourage all of our listeners to offer prayers as well.

The recent horrific shooting spree in an Aurora movie theater is the springboard for a much broader conversation about the changing mores of our society, the church's view of tragedy in Godʼs bigger plan, and whether we can reverse this incredibly negative trend, as we wrap-up a month-long series on violence. The power of collective and directed prayer should never be underestimated.

To read and listen to more of our thoughts on this event, please visit The Sounding (http://blog.myocn.com). The Sounding blogger/podcaster, Christy Pessemier also shares her thoughts on the movie theater shootings in Aurora, Colorado in a special podcast entitled “Response to Colorado Shooting: Don’t Give Evil the Front Row Seat.” The full message will be featured as part of CRTL on myocn.net.
