I am Fr. Anthony Cook, a recent graduate of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, a recent ordinand to the priesthood, and the assistant priest at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Saint Clair Shores, MI. My participation on this blog is intended to provide something of a center for reviews of popular moviesas they are released in the theatres. Comments and discussion are welcome, of course.
Thus far, I have published only one review, discussing The Golden Compass, New Line Cinema's recently released effort to repeat the success of their Lord of the Rings trilogy. The review may be found here --anyone familiar with the controversy surrounding the movie's release will not be surprised that an Orthodox priest does not come away with a positive opinion. But the reasons might surprise you a little bit.
That brings me to an important point: the disclaimer. Yes, I am a priest. Just because I am a priest does not mean that my opinion regarding the suitability of any particular movie will agree with yours, as parents, or as serious Orthodox Christians seeking to live a purer life. I will make an effort to mention any objectionable content, but cannot promise to mention it all. And there may be instances where I find a movie worthwhile in spite of its content. As in all things, let the reader beware.
For the moment, my intention is to review whatever movies I have seen and about which I think I have something worthwhile to say. But I will certainly consider requests for a review of a specific movie--just mention it in the comments here.
