The content of “The Sounding” has been expanded to address the breadth of topics Orthodox Christians encounter and ponder in their daily lives. Melinda Johnson, the new blog chief, joined the staff of OCN in December 2011. She is the author of Letters to Saint Lydia (Conciliar Press, 2010) and founder of the popular “Orthodox Writers, Readers, and Artists” series, which first appeared on her blog, “Saint Lydia’s Book Club.” The series will move to “The Sounding” this month. Melinda received a Master of Arts in English Literature from The College of William and Mary, and worked as an editor specializing in projects for non-native English speakers before becoming a full-time writer.

The Orthodox Christian Network has been an official agency of SCOBA since 2003 and is now working within the new Episcopal Assembly. Commissioned by our hierarchs to create a national, sustainable and effective media witness for Orthodox Christianity throughout North America, OCN produces the only nationally syndicated Orthodox Christian radio broadcast, as well as several other outreach programs, including DVDs and internet-based media, in direct collaboration with sister assembly agencies (e.g., IOCC, OCMC, OCF, OCPM), as well as with various Orthodox Christian jurisdictions and pan-Orthodox, para-church organizations. Our goal is to engage the broader culture of North America with Orthodox Christianity’s rich theological, spiritual, and moral heritage, and to thereby strengthen the Orthodox Church’s witness and contribution to the culture in which we live.

OCN PODCASTS
On Theologically Thinking, Fr. Athanasios Haros of Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church, Florence S.C. shares his sermon, "When We Thank God." Each of us has been blessed by our Lord, but thinking about our gratitude just isn’t enough. The healing of the Ten Lepers described in Luke 17.12-19 reveals that it is both offerings and praise that expresses our gratitude. When we want to thank God, we should come to Church with our Tithe and stay to offer Him praise and worship. This week on Harmony of Thunder: St. Gregory Palamas paints a picture of Zacchaeus (St. Luke 19:1-10) as a man who wanted both sin and salvation, the old law and the new testament, riches and poverty. Listen to this week's Harmony of Thunder as Fr. David Smith explores St. Gregory Palamas' remarkable sermon and reveals the valuable lessons this outstanding preacher made for his original hearers and for us today."

Share the Light Sunday - January 15, 2012
Who is your hero?
On Sunday, January 15, 2012 we kindly ask all parishes to please announce that the Orthodox Christian Network will be honoring its first ever hero.  This person must be nominated by someone other than a family member and must have distinguished him or herself in Christian love and service to others. Any of our listeners around the world will be able to nominate candidates online during the year of 2012.  The Board of Directors and staff of OCN will review and select 10 candidates to be put before our international listening audience, who will then choose the winner. The winner will be a special guest on Come Receive the Light, will receive a free excursion paid for by OCN and will have 500 dollars given in their name to the charity of their choice by OCN.
The Orthodox Christian Network is not underwritten by an archdiocese, organization or individual.  We depend on the generous contributions of our parishes to sustain and build this ministry.  Our goal for 2012 is $130,000 in contributions from our parishes.  Therefore, we kindly ask all Orthodox Christian parishes to please pass a tray in support of OCN and to raise awareness about this ministry on Sunday, January 15th, 2012.   A sermon for Share the Light Sunday is available at www.myocn.net/stl
OCN will also keep a record of any Share the Light contributions it receives from your parish and will credit them toward funding your parish's radio ministry, when your parish chooses to partner with OCN in the creation of a radio station.
Please continue to help this ministry grow, and please remember to Share the Light.
