Symposium Introduction
Saint Vladimir’s Symposium 2010

Greek philosophy and culture have left an indelible mark on Orthodox Christianity, in all of its theological, liturgical, and artistic expressions, as well as on the churches and their interrelationships. At this symposium, noted Orthodox speakers examined the topic "Hellenism and Orthodoxy" broadly, in terms of time and place. The role of Hellenistic culture in the spread of the early Christianity was analyzed, and speakers delved into how Hellenistic thought influenced and contrasted with the biblical Scriptures. The symposium also explored the ramifications of Hellenism, noting its lasting and profound effects on the cultural, linguistic, and canonical history of the Orthodox Church.

This is the introduction to the symposium by Dr. Peter Boutenhoff of the faculty at St. Vladimir's.
