Conference on Climate Change - Part 2

On Monday April 23, Saint Sophia Cathedral hosted the Conference on Climate Change sponsored by NRCCC. Representatives from a large majority of America’s faith traditions convened a major conference on climate change. The conference brought together religious and science leaders, medical professionals and military leaders to alert citizens across the nation to the seriousness of the climate issue.

Every major religious tradition has examined the climate issue. This conference presented a united voice from organized religion – Roman Catholics with Jews, Evangelicals with Eastern Orthodox and Mainline Protestants. These voices were joined by science leaders. Dr. James Hansen, honorary chair of the science section of this conference, emphasized that “climate change is a moral issue.”

Dr. Lise Van Sustern, MD, author of a new report detailing the psychological effects of global climate disruption, provided a penetrating perspective from medicine. Speakers came from across the U.S. Dr. Wes Jackson, from The Land Institute in Salina, Kansas, addressed climate change and food security. Brigadier General Steven Anderson, US Army (ret.), presented the perspective on climate from the Pentagon and discussed how the military plans to engage the climate issue.
