Would you like to use the movie as an opportunity to engage the teens in your life or parish? Check out this resource guide from the Department of Youth & Young Adult Ministries of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
Take advantage of the 'teachable
moment'
- See the film and host a discussion
afterwards at the church or home of a teen using some of the resources
below.
- After seeing the film, have teens
read some of the reviews (positive and negative) and discuss.
- When the topic of atheism comes
up, use some of the resources below to address it. PBS did a great series
comparing CS Lewis (Christian theologian) to Sigmund Freud (atheist &
skeptic). Link is below. Have teenagers watch, then discuss.
- Many critics call this film "anti-God."
After seeing the film together, discuss with youth what "anti-God"
views are found in their everyday lives (school, work, home, etc) and how
we respond as Christians.
- Philip Pullman, the author upon
whose books The Golden Compass is based, has many similarities to
the style of C.S. Lewis (a prolific Christian author). In fact, Pullman
has been called the "anti-Lewis." After watching The Golden
Compass, watch The Chronicles of Narnia (2006), based on Lewis'
books. Compare and contrast the two films in a discussion.
NOTE: The Golden
Compass is a PG-13 movie, meaning that according to the MPAA, this film
may be inappropriate for children under the age of thirteen. It contains
fantasy violence as well as other mature content; it is for this reason
that we do not recommend this film for younger children.
