Response to new program "Orthodox Teen Survival Guide"

Teenagers in the home and parish are observant critics of behaviors they have witnessed among their parents, priest(s), and other adults in the parish unit.

Given teenage stages of emotional, spiritual and cognitive development, teenagers are inclined to exchange what may have been their silence for speaking up about what they have seen their parents actually do, versus what their parents say is right to do. Adult caregivers--including parents, teachers and priests--know that their teenagers can and will make astute observations, and even ask troubling questions.

After all, teenagers talk about what they have observed while growing up among us. No doubt that such observations and questions as teenagers raise can embarrass adults caught in their own hypocrital webs.

Therefore, I would recommend airing real-to-life conversations among parents, priests, Christian education teachers, GOYA leaders and teenagers provide vignettes for comment by one or more commentators--outside or added to the segmented conversations--in order to simulate problem-identification and exemplify effective and ineffective process or communication skills among and between adults and teenagers. Separating an analysis of conversations from dialogue within the conversations conveys practicality and immediate application to the listening audience.

Finally, I would recommend that emphasis of all episodes should be on forming the souls of teenagers in Christ, and avoiding any emphasis on or rehearsal of a list of do's and don't about moral choices. Promoting the voices of teenagers may create anxiety on the part of the production team, but mild-to-moderate anxiety in the production team can also sharpen and clarify the program's focus. Therefore, in addition to expert guidance by Church leaders, attract and nurture a non-stipendiary and hands-on group of advisors to aid in defining how to engage teenagers and adults in dialogue that matters to them.

My prayers remain with you and the ministry of OCN.
