Thank you Father for these inspiring words.
I want to understand Orthodox thinking
written by Gary Collins, December 24, 2009
I listened to your sermon with intrigue. The only problem I noticed is that it rather sounds like the Roman Catholic Church's method of thinking. Is it a works method? I am Protestant so admittedly our thoughts may not be together on this but I ask where is our acceptance of the grace of God if all we have to do is obey the golden rule?

Thank you,
Gary

Just a quick passage about the Golden Rule...

Romans 13:8-10

8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, "Do not commit adultery," "Do not murder," "Do not steal," "Do not covet,"[a] and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: "Love your neighbor as yourself." 10 Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
Works vs Grace
written by Reverend Father Athanasios C Haros, December 30, 2009
Gary,
Your question is quite understandable. Salvation is always grace no matter what works we do while alive since it is only God's gift to us that we are even allowed to do the works that we do. Everything is a gift from God. As for salvation, we must never forget that faith without works is dead! We cannot love God and hate our neighbor. The "Golden Rule" is a reminder of how we show our love for each other not so that we can get to heaven but simply because we love God. If we love God we could never leave someone to suffer without trying to help. The Golden Rule is a method of living our faith and since living our faith is "getting to heaven" then they become connected in that sense. I pray this helps.
