The new Patriarch was chosen from a shortlist agreed on over the weekend. Kirill replaces Alexiy II who died last month.
The 62-year-old is seen as the most reformist of the candidates, likely to make attempts to heal tension with the Roman Catholic Church. His closest rival was Metropolitan Kliment, seen by many as the favoured candidate of the conservative camp.
