Just as Christ's Apostles were enabled on the Day of Pentecost to proclaim the Gospel in many different languages, so this episode of "Icons in Sound" proclaims the message of the feast in a variety of languages -- Greek, Church Slavonic, and English, and features a variety of musical styles, offering "praise with one voice." Todays’s "Icons in Sound" program focuses on the hymns of Holy Pentecost sung in a variety of languages and musical styles.
The opening hymn, “O Heavenly King,” is sung by a choir of Alaskan clergy, taken from a recording of the Akathist in honor of the wonder-working Sitka Icon of the Theotokos.
The Troparion of Pentecost is heard in several versions: in Greek, from a CD entitled “The Greek Orthodox Experience” (CD J19), featuring choirs under the direction of Constantine Zorbas; in English, from a recording entitled “Prepare the Feast” (CD I-76) by the Choir of the Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church in Greensboro, North Carolina, Kevin Lawrence, director; and in Church Slavonic, from a CD devoted entirely to the hymns of Holy Pentecost (CD B94) by Hierodeacon Gherman (Ryabtsev).
A number of the hymns that follow are from CDs that are out print and no longer available, chief among them the disc “The Feasts of the Orthodox Liturgical Year,” by the Ural Choir of Perm, Russia.
For the hymn “We have seen the true light” we return to the CD by the Choir of the Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church, and then also the new CD by Archangel Voices, entitled “Master, Bless” (CD I-75). We also hear the hymn “Let our mouths be filled” sung to the same Bulgarian chant melody as “We have seen the true light.” Finally, we hear the Great Prokeimenon “Who is so great a God as our God,” also sung by Archangel Voices from their CD entitled “Resurrection! Chants and Hymns of Holy Pascha” (CD I-70).
